Sevenoaks
The market town of Sevenoaks has a
long history, stretching back to before the 13th Century, although it
was only in the middle of that Century that it acquired its market when two main
roads heading to the coast through the Weald were merged.
Because of Green Belt planning restrictions the town has managed to stay
relatively small which helps to give the town its character along with the many
historic buildings that still remain. In addition to St Nicholas’ Church which
dates back to the 12th Century it also has a number of schools with
long and distinguished histories, the oldest being Sevenoaks School which was
founded in the first half of the 15th Century (and which is one of
the few co-ed schools offering the International Baccalaureate in this
country). Sevenoaks is bordered on one side by Knole Park, a thousand acre
park with many deer and containing Knole House a beautiful National Trust
property built in the 15th Century by Thomas Bouchier the then
Archbishop of Canterbury and subsequently given by Elizabeth I to her cousin
Thomas Sackville.
Today, Sevenoaks is a commuter town
with a third of its population travelling to London each day as it is
conveniently located on a main train line with regular trains to Cannon Street
in the City as well as to London Bridge, Waterloo and Charing Cross. It is also
conveniently located for the M25 and for routes down to the Channel tunnel.
